AC charging pile



An AC charging pile, also known as an AC charging station or AC charger, is a device used to recharge electric vehicles (EVs) or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by providing them with alternating current (AC) power. It is one of the common types of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

AC charging piles are typically installed in public spaces, parking lots, commercial buildings, or residential areas to offer a convenient and accessible charging solution for EV owners. They are equipped with one or multiple charging points, allowing multiple vehicles to charge simultaneously.

Here's how an AC charging pile works:

  1. Power supply: The charging pile is connected to the electrical grid to receive AC power. The power source could be the local power distribution network or a dedicated power supply for charging infrastructure.
     
  2. Charging cable: The charging pile is equipped with a charging cable that has a plug compatible with the EV or PHEV. Different regions and countries might have different plug standards, such as Type 1 (SAE J1772) or Type 2 (IEC 62196).
     
  3. Vehicle connection: The EV owner plugs the charging cable into their vehicle's charging port, which is usually located on the side or front of the vehicle.
     
  4. Charging process: Once connected, the charging pile communicates with the vehicle to negotiate the charging parameters, such as voltage and current limits. The charging pile then supplies the appropriate AC power to the vehicle's onboard charger.
     
  5. Charging time: The charging time depends on various factors, including the vehicle's battery capacity, the charging power level supported by the vehicle, and the charging station. AC charging typically takes longer compared to DC fast charging because the onboard charger in the vehicle converts AC power to DC power for battery storage.
     
  6. Charging completion: Once the charging process is complete, the vehicle owner disconnects the charging cable from the vehicle, and the charging pile terminates the charging session.

It's important to note that the charging speed of an AC charging pile is typically slower compared to DC fast charging stations. AC charging is suitable for overnight charging at home, workplace charging, or longer parking durations. However, it may not be ideal for quick charging on long-distance trips.

The development and deployment of AC charging infrastructure are essential to support the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and provide EV owners with convenient charging options.
