The difference between EMC and EMI

EMC and EMI are related terms used in the field of electrical engineering.

EMC stands for Electromagnetic Compatibility, while EMI stands for Electromagnetic Interference. Although both terms deal with the interaction of electromagnetic fields, they refer to different aspects of the problem.


EMC refers to the ability of an electronic device or system to function properly in its electromagnetic environment without interfering with other devices in that environment. EMI, on the other hand, refers to the unwanted electromagnetic energy that is generated by an electronic device or system and interferes with the operation of other devices in its environment. EMI can be caused by various factors such as poor grounding, faulty wiring, or inadequate shielding. EMI can cause devices to malfunction or operate unpredictably, leading to potential safety hazards.
